The Advantages Of Private Dental Insurance

Private dental insurance works like any other insurance plan, where the insured is covered against all expenses that arise out of a new dental ailment. So, then why is it not as popular like…say life insurance? There are many reasons but the most important one is likely to be the (perceived) high cost of premiums. Are the premiums really high? Let us try to find out.

Most of the regular insurance policies do not cover dental treatment and costs because the probability of a normal and healthy individual, developing dental complications is many times higher than the risk of the same individual contracting any other type of ailment. This high risk does not make it a viable option (read as profitable!) in general insurance policies. Nine out of ten people are bound to have teeth related problems and this makes it the most common type of ailment in the common man. The irony is that the majority of them do not have private dental insurance to cover the cost of a very common and frequently occurring medical expense.

The risk involved in covering dental ailments is very high and so, the premiums for any private dental insurance is on the higher side but this is offset by the probability factor. It is safe to assume that you are one amongst the nine people (out of ten), who suffer from dental complications and covering your expenses via private dental insurance is a sure way of saving money that you eventually have to spend. Dentistry is not immune to the rising costs ‘syndrome’ that the modern economy is facing. Treatment costs are bound to go higher in direct proportion to the increasing cost of skilled labor. The premiums paid for private dental insurance coverage is only a fraction of the total cost of the dental treatment and is surely money spent well.

Unlike group dental insurances, private dental insurance gives you the freedom to consult the dentist of your choice. Dental treatment is sensitive and personal in nature and a good doctor – patient rapport is necessary for the complete comfort of the patient. Group plans limit the consultation of the insured, to one doctor, who is not directly paid by the patient. The chances of developing a personal rapport are very slim and in most cases the patients do not have the option of changing over to a new doctor. Private dental insurance plans grant the liberty of private consultation and also have the benefit of covering many more dental treatment procedures than the group plans.

Teeth are the one of the busiest parts of the human body (the dirtiest too!) and are subject to a lot of wear and tear. They also face the maximum exposure to external elements. This makes them the most prone to infections and ailments. Private dental insurance coverage gives the protection and security that you need to guard against expensive and unexpected treatment costs. Relatively higher premiums should not be a reason for you to neglect the necessity of dental care and protection. When the time comes for you to pay a visit to a dentist (it is not an ‘IF’ but a ‘When’!), you can do so with the assurance that your budget will not take a hit as a result of the expense.
